Use decorative pots to house your plants AND to add color, texture, height, shape, and general visual interest to your space

I am in the beginning stages of my plant lady era. Green is my favorite color, and when I recently decided I needed to fill in some blank spaces in our home with decor, some hearty green plants were my new home accents of choice. Fun thing about getting new plants - you will need planters to go with them! That is what I call the "If you give a mouse a cookie" effect...

Indoor planters are not only a practical need to house your plants, but they also serve as beautiful décor themselves. They can add pops of color, texture, height, shape, all of the above to spaces in your home that may need some personality or intentional filler.

Hot tips for planting plants in decorative pots

  1. Keep plants in grow pots I keep my plants in the grow pots they come in until they show signs they need more soil and a larger pot (signs like roots growing through drainage hole and the plant constantly drying out and seemingly never getting enough water). Keeping a plant in the grow pot allows me to lift it out for water drainage so that the plant doesn’t get overwatered or rotting roots.

  2. Reduce, reuse, recycle containers to help elevate your plant in a tall pot

Cut off the bottom of old plastic containers to help elevate your plants in a planter

Decorative planters typically come in standard widths (4 inches, 6 inches, 8 inches, 10 inches...) but may vary in height. If I have a grow pot that I want to put in a decorative planter that is taller than the grow pot, my hot tip is to cut off the bottom of a recycled cylindrical container (like cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt…), put it upside down in the decorative pot and place the plant on top of it so that the plant is not being hidden by the height of the pot. A great way to recycle and it also adds another way for water to drain from the grow pot. Root rot is the enemy!

My Favorite Decorative Pots for Houseplants

As I’ve been building my indoor plant collection, here are some of my favorite indoor planters that I’ve come across on my search. Some of them come in just one size while others come in multiple sizes based on how big your plants are.

Such a beautiful and simple way to add life and dimension to your space. Happy planting!

Indoor planters with unique forms/shapes

Indoor planters with stands or for hanging

These planters provide better proportions for plants that need to fill more space vertically, whether through hanging from the ceiling or being elevated on a surface with plant stands.
